A good example of why intuitive health claims still need careful evidence review.
Hydration is necessary, but the research question is specific
Water is essential for normal human physiology. The scientific question is not whether severe dehydration is unhealthy; it is how different degrees of hydration or rehydration affect particular cognitive tasks under particular conditions.
What a systematic review found
A 2021 systematic review evaluated hydration status and executive function in adults. Results were inconsistent: roughly half of available studies suggested unclear or neutral effects, while others reported effects in areas such as working memory, inhibitory control or attention. The authors called for more consistent methods and longer-term research.
Why hydration studies can disagree
Researchers can induce dehydration through exercise, heat or fluid restriction, and those methods introduce different physical stresses. Cognitive tests also vary, and performance may be influenced by fatigue, heat, mood or expectation. That makes it difficult to reduce the literature to a single “one glass boosts memory” rule.
Practical healthy-aging context

Why hydration studies can produce mixed cognitive findings
Hydration affects physiology, but cognitive studies vary in how dehydration is induced, how hydration status is measured, the severity of fluid loss, participant age and which cognitive tasks are used. A systematic review of executive function found a heterogeneous literature rather than a simple universal threshold at which cognition changes.
That variability is a useful lesson for supplement evidence. “Brain function” is not one outcome. Attention, inhibition, working memory, processing speed and recall can respond differently, and a statistically significant result on one task should not be generalized to every aspect of cognition.
For everyday health, maintaining appropriate fluid intake remains sensible, especially for older adults or people exposed to heat or illness. But hydration should not be used as a rhetorical comparison to imply that a particular supplement has an established cognitive effect.
